Body Integration — Aluminium Body for the nuCamp Cirrus 920

Goal

Define the aluminium body system that interfaces the OpenOverland sub-frame with the nuCamp Cirrus 920 truck camper.

Architecture

The body has two functional zones.

Lower zone — wheel well enclosures: The lower boxes wrap around the tire positions and form the wheel wells. No separate wheel well structure is needed. The departure angle geometry is integrated into the rear lower faces.

Upper zone — storage and camper platform: The upper section provides the full-width deck the camper sits on, the structural top rail for the tie-down receivers, and the upper storage compartments accessible from both sides.

Tie-Down System

The camper is secured by four stainless turnbuckle rods — one at each Torklift bracket position.

  • Right hand thread one end, left hand thread other end — cannot unscrew under vibration
  • Forged stainless jaw ends
  • Receiver points welded into the structural top rail
  • Load path: camper bracket → turnbuckle → sub-frame

Storage

Lower boxes:

  • Form the wheel well enclosures
  • Departure angle cut on rear face
  • Tail lights recessed into the departure angle faces
  • Mud flap bracket integrated into bottom rear edge

Upper compartments:

  • Full length both sides
  • Accessible from both sides

All compartments include:

  • Interior LED lighting with door switch
  • L-track on interior walls

Door System

Standard commercial truck body hardware throughout.

  • Continuous stainless piano hinge — full door length
  • EPDM D-bulb perimeter seal with rain gutter
  • Stainless T-handle compression latch — lockable
  • Aircraft cable door stop
  • Gas strut hold-open

Rear Deck

The Cirrus 920 native rear metal deck is used for expedition storage.

  • 4x Wavian 20L jerry cans — locked in dedicated holders
  • MaxTrax x2 — bracket mounted
  • Baja Designs S2 Pro reverse light

Materials

  • Body panels: 5052-H32 or 6061-T6 aluminum sheet
  • Structural extrusions: 6061-T6
  • Door hardware: 316 stainless throughout
  • Fasteners at aluminum-steel interface: 316 stainless
  • Isolation pads: UHMW polyethylene at all aluminum-to-steel contact points

Coating

  • Exterior: powder coat — matte black
  • Lower faces and bottom surfaces: Line-X polyurea
